Heather del Rosal has created art since childhood and has been a painter for nearly 30 years, first seriously exploring her talents in college. She has sold her paintings inspired by nature, architecture, human health and physiology, and travel experiences at the Box Factory since 2023. She frequently works in a contemporary Impressionist style with oil paints and occasionally uses other media, such as watercolor and printmaking.
Her creative process begins with moments, places, or visual encounters that create a positive emotional resonance and invite closer attention; photographing what captures her interest and returning to the images later as points of departure for new works. Through these photographs, digital concept ideas, and hand sketching, she develops explorative compositions. The subjects of her inspiration shape her understanding of the world, together influencing her paintings and allowing her to explore her surroundings and how they can affect our perception, emotions, and sense of well-being.
Many of her paintings are influenced by the time she has spent in Mexico with her Mexican husband. Although she grew up in Southwest Michigan and loves the connection to freshwater lakes, fields, and small American towns, her travels in Mexico have introduced her to the beauty of the desert, ocean, and mountains. She has enjoyed meeting the gracious and friendly people of Mexico, and experienced their cities and towns, their food, and a slower pace of life.
“Before my work reaches viewers, it is first a way for me to reflect upon the world around me and organize my own thoughts and feelings. For a number of years I felt that my art could be subservient to other pursuits, and I nearly omitted my personal art projects. But after 50 years of life experiences – good decisions and bad, employment and unemployment, being young and starting to age, traveling to different countries, being in the homes of the wealthy and poor, three years healing from mold illness, etc.- I realize that making art has an important role in my well-being. Studies have shown that making and even enjoying art activates the relaxation and healing side of the nervous system. That means art has an important role in my health and even the health of society. So I now know that for me, art is not just a career, but a necessary part of my life.” – Heather del Rosal
